ນິວຊີແລນທົດລອງທົດລອງໃຊ້ສາມເດືອນກັບ Pulsed Electric Field Technology (PEF) ທີ່ຮ້ານ McCain Foods

The Pulsed Electric Field Technology (PEF) machine on display at McCain Foods in Washdyke The aim is to produce healthier fries as the potatoes absorb less oil during the cooking process after having the PEF treatment. The electric field being pulsed through uncut potatoes during processing alters their microstructure, which results in a more controlled release of sugar, more uniform coloration and reduced oil uptake.McCain Foods Australia/New Zealand director John Jackson said the McCain Timaru plant (Washdyke) was looking to invest $2m in the technology.Jackson said two key components of the trial were waste reduction and energy saving. The Washdyke operation employed about 130 people and processed 150,000 tonnes of potatoes annually, he said. The PEF processing affected the cell membrane so it could be used to enhance the extraction of pigments or bioactive compounds from potatoes, increasing their yield and quality or to kill micro-organisms as an alternative to the pasteurisation process. Jackson said the process was also promising in terms of combating Tomato-Potato Psyllid, which spreads disease in potatoes.Otago University head of food sciences and PEF project leader Professor Indrawati Oey said PEF technology also had the potential to enhance the quality and value of other agricultural and horticultural...

In what’s sure to be a disappointment to everyone who has been missing Art’s & Mary’s Homestyle Tater Chips, the Wichita company has filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy. That means that Sunflower Mountain Distribution is not attempting to reorganize but to liquidate. Sunflower, which filed May 3 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, lists more than USD 1.22 million in assets and more than USD 2.76 million in liabilities. No one with the company returned calls for comment. In January, Have You Heard? reported that the chips with the cult following were no longer in area stores. After several calls over the course of about a week, an Art’s & Mary’s representative replied via e-mail to say that the company was 'in the process of making some placement modifications. There have been no other modifications. We will keep you posted as we have updates. We appreciate the patience of all our loyal customers during this time.' In spring 2016, John France and his family purchased the company’s assets from Cheney-based Albers Development, including the recipe and trademark for Art’s & Mary’s and a distribution business that distributes the chips and other food products. The company had gross revenue of more than USD 2.58...

The Australian Industry Association AUSVEG has published a Potato Growers’ Biosecurity Manual. The Potato Growers’ Biosecurity Manual is a guide to farm biosecurity measures to reduce the risk of weeds, pests, and diseases impacting production. It was developed by Plant Health Australia (PHA) with consultation from AUSVEG and potato growers across NSW, Victoria and South Australia. The manual is designed for use by potato growers and their staff, as well as contractors, processors, researchers, and consultants working in the potato industry. It gives specific advice on what potato producers need to be aware of, and what measures they should be taking on their farm to reduce biosecurity risks. The manual is separated into six areas of biosecurity practice that will help potato growers safeguard their farm from biosecurity risks: cleaning equipment and vehicles and restricting movements of vehicles and people from production areasfarm inputs;production practices;farm outputs;feral animals and weeds; andtraining, planning and recording. A broader explanation of Australia’s biosecurity system including pre-border, at-the-border and post-border biosecurity procedures is also provided in the manual. The Australian government manages pre-border and at-the-border procedures and regulations, but it’s the responsibility of all Australians, including potato growers, to reduce or eliminate the risk of...

For the second time in just a few weeks, Polish potato producers have protested against low prices. Growers of the Unia Warzywno-Potato Union gathered in front of the Lodz Agricultural Advisory Centre in Bratoszewice, waiting for a representative of the Ministry of Agriculture to be able to present their postulates. Before entering the building in Kościerzyna, the producers threw potatoes on the stairs. The centre was hosting a session of the Sejm Agriculture and Rural Development Committee. Michał Kołodziejczak, President of the Union of Vegetable and Potato Producers: “In this way, we want to stress how dire the market situation is not just for potatoes, but also for other vegetables.”“The throwing of potatoes was meant to show that it is better to throw them away than to market them for a loss, given the current prices.” For a sack of potatoes (15 kg), the producer gets 4 zloty (about 0.92 Euro), and the production costs amount to 8 zloty, stressed Kołodziejczyk. Michał Kołodziejczak: “Nobody can make a living from the crop with these prices, and we are sleeping just 4 to 6 hours a day.” The growers in the protest came, among other places, from Sieradz, Sandomierz, Ostrów Wlkp., Łęczyca,...

Potato farmers in Nyandarua (Kenya) have approved regulations for Irish potatoes production, handling and marketing. They expressed reservations, however, about some sections of the regulations contained in the Crops Act, 2013. The rules require compliance with best practices in production, transportation and storage. They focus on marketing and quality assurance, and procedures and conditions for registration of growers, associations and dealers. More than 350 farmers and other sector players — including aggregators, government officials, transporters, marketing agents and processors — took part in a public participation forum at ACK Hall, Ol Kalou. They agreed potatoes should not be packaged in bags larger than 50kg. This is to protect farmers from exploitation by brokers or other dealers. They however contested the section requiring dealers to register with county or national governments. They said this will raise the cost of production and hurt profitability. The farmers also fear the proposed registration of growers’ associations and marketing agents, among others, could make room for unscrupulous traders to infiltrate the sector, as happened in tea and coffee sectors. Njuguna Mwangi from Kipipiri: “We want some of these terms clearly defined and the role of dealers made clear. Otherwise, their job may be to confine...

What matters more for food businesses, quality and safety or quantity? The long-standing consensus among food growers, packers and processors is that quality is crucial. Delivering a high-quality product – uniform in size, shape and color and free from contamination, foreign materials and damaged items. Delivering a safe quality product results in maintained consumer trust and maximized sales and profits, whilst ensuring the brand is protected. But does food quality and safety and food quantity have to be opposing factors, so that as output increases quality suffers? The fact is, food businesses must increase production to meet growing global demand for food, and many are also looking to diversify into new markets and categories. It is more vital now than ever before that these businesses ensure the highest food quality and safety. There isn’t one simple solution, but there are various actions food businesses can take to cut out defective produce, optimize yields and keep the customer coming back. The risk of foreign objects Foreign objects and materials can cause food manufacturers serious consequences. In a recent report from the Stericycle Recall Index, it is noted that foreign materials are the leading cause for product recalls1 in the United States....

The latest data on in-store airflow, tuber respiration and sprout suppression is included in the 3rd edition of Sutton Bridge Crop Storage Research’s (SBCSR) Potato Store Managers’ Guide. The guide is written by Adrian Cunnington, Head of Crop Storage Research at AHDB and is the latest publication from the world-leading SBCSR research team. Adrian Cunnington, Head of Crop Storage Research at AHDB: “Potato storage is a key element of modern-day potato production, looking to fulfil the demands of many markets.”“It can be practised successfully, but it must also be acknowledged that storage poses a risk. Its success depends on how well that risk is managed and, ultimately, whether the customer for the crop in question is delivered the quality for which they are prepared to pay.”“Since the original publication 17 years ago, the knowledge required by a store manager has increased with pressure on managing energy costs, contributing to supply chain waste and sustainability programmes, working with newer varieties and greater emphasis on health and safety.” The team at SBCSR was established in the 1960s and is there for all AHDB levy payers to consult for store management advice on the Storage Advice Line. AHDB levy payers can call 0800...
