Early registration for the XXXI ALAP Congress, set for 19–23 April 2027 in Uruguay, is open until 25 November 2026

The Latin American Potato Association (Asociación Latinoamericana de la Papa, ALAP) will hold its 31st congress in Montevideo, Uruguay, from 19 to 23 April 2027, marking half a century since the association was established. The event will run under the theme “50 years cultivating knowledge: the potato, food and Latin American culture” (“50 años cultivando conocimiento: la papa, alimento y cultura latinoamericana”).

Billed by its organisers as the region’s main scientific and technical meeting point for the potato value chain, the congress will be hosted at the José Luis Massera multipurpose building of the Faculty of Engineering, University of the Republic (Udelar), in Montevideo’s Punta Carretas district.

Programme and themes

According to the organising committee’s first circular, the five-day programme will include pre-congress workshops, keynote lectures, oral and poster sessions, round tables, a field day, the ALAP General Assembly and a social and cultural programme.

Scientific sessions will be grouped into six thematic areas:

• genetics, breeding and seed systems;
• crop management;
• plant health and crop protection;
• innovation and digital agriculture;
• the potato as food: quality, nutrition and added value;
• agri-food systems, markets and development.

The organisers also aim to highlight the potato’s role in food security and as part of the region’s cultural heritage.

The call for abstracts closed on 28 August 2026. Early registration opened on 28 September and runs until 25 November 2026, with categories for general delegates, ALAP members, students and accompanying persons. The congress is jointly organised by ALAP, Uruguay’s National Institute for Agricultural Research (INIA), the University of the Republic and the National Association of Seed Potato Growers (ANSEPA). The event is aimed at researchers, academics, students, extension specialists, growers, companies and technology suppliers from across the potato value chain.

ALAP brings together potato researchers, extension specialists and industry stakeholders across Latin America, organising regional meetings and facilitating the exchange of scientists and genetic material. Since 1988 it has published the peer-reviewed Revista Latinoamericana de la Papa.

Its congresses are held every two years in different host countries. The 28th edition, in Cusco, Peru, in 2018, was the first to be held jointly with the World Potato Congress, drawing more than 800 participants from 50 countries.
